The Man In The Glass – the Poem Bill referred to in the Podcast
When you get what you want in your struggle for self
And the world makes you king for a day
Just go to the mirror and look at yourself
And see what that man has to say.
For it isn’t your father, or mother, or wife
Whose judgement upon you must pass
The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life
Is the one staring back from the glass.
He’s the fellow to please – never mind all the rest
For he’s with you, clear to the end
And you’ve passed your most difficult, dangerous test
If the man in the glass is your friend.
You may fool the whole world down the pathway of years
And get pats on the back as you pass
But your final reward will be heartache and tears
If you’ve cheated the man in the glass.

What’s the difference between being included and FEELING included?
To what extent do you go out of your way to learn about things that are naturally very different from your norm?
My conversation with Joanne Lockwood was enlightening to say the least. From the get go Joanne is real and raw about the type of leader she was ‘in a former life’ and how her focus on inclusive leadership did a 180 degree about turn.
In this podcast explore:-
- Why belonging is as important as inclusion
- How a life-changing event can get you to question who you are
- What inclusion is and isn’t and simple strategies leaders can implement to build inclusive workplace cultures
- Understanding privilege and what we can do to build a deeper understanding in teams – ‘check your privilege’
- How difficult it can be for small to medium businesses to understand conscious inclusion and what to do about it
- The graffiti artist story
- Why an open door policy is NOT inclusive
If you’d like to connect with Joanne please click here

The Courageous Leader - a Conversation with Shelagh Brennand
Sunday Dec 15, 2019
Sunday Dec 15, 2019
In this episode we follow Shelagh’s journey from her 25 year career in the Yorkshire police force in the UK and CID (Criminal Investigation Department) through to her moving with her family to the Sunshine Coast in Queensland Australia, deciding to retire and become ‘a lady wot does lunch’ to starting a new career…then everything changing literally overnight as Shelagh experienced a life-changing event.
As usual, these notes are much better read after you have listened to the podcast as Shelagh lets her life story unfold in a way that you will want to follow.
Here are some of the golden nuggets I gleaned from our conversation;-
- the power of humour in dealing with trauma – even when it seems so politically incorrect
- our brain consists of many cabinets – some close permanently, some for a while and others miraculously open
- embrace unexpected gifts
- when the unexpected happens – learn to focus on what you CAN do, not what you can’t
- the role of a strong support network to maintain and build resilience
- the practice of gratitude to maintain perspective
- building your self-awareness to understand your cognitive capacity and work with it – not against it
- the oxygen mask analogy – self-care MUST come first

The Heart-centred Leader - a Conversation with Ronnie Altit of Insentra
Tuesday Dec 03, 2019
Tuesday Dec 03, 2019
As usual, I would strongly encourage you to listen to the podcast first, then the golden nuggets that Ronnie shares below will come to life and make much more sense.
- I open the podcast by asking Ronnie how Insentra gets such high ratings on Glassdoor – both for existing and past team members
- Ronnie talks about creating a heart-centred culture from scratch, including all the things he and his co-founders loved in past careers and excluding the opposite – he also challenges leaders to consider their real drivers for creating their desired culture
- The famous ‘Train Story’ unfolds as a metaphor developed over 20 years that I liken to a manifesto – well worth a read with a cuppa!
- Ronnie shares his (borrowed) strategy for starting meetings in a heart-centred way – simple yet profound
- How psychological safety (no fear of retribution in Insentra language) can be hard to implement
- Why some leaders struggle to bring love into business
- Ronnie shares his philosophy on aligning intentions with impact in communication
- I absolutely love this golden nugget – how saving in one area of the business facilitates bringing your people together (I ask Ronnie to repeat the message)
- The essential difference between being excellent and striving for excellence
- Key questions for other leaders in creating a heart-centred culture
- A non-conscious authentic approach to fessing up when you stuff up! What to do when things go pear-shaped.
If you would like to follow or connect with Ronnie on LinkedIn here is his link https://www.linkedin.com/in/ronniealtit and he’s always up for a coffee!
